WRA is looking ahead to 2010

The Wisconsin Youth Leadership Forum (WI YLF) is now accepting applications!

The YLF is a week long opportunity for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with disabilities to improve their leadership skills, increase their career awareness and learn about their rights and responsibilities.  Selected attendees learn about a variety of topics such as higher education, career awareness, self-advocacy, laws and how to affect legislation.  Students meet with their legislators, develop a Personal Leadership Plan of action, meet with other leaders with disabilities in the state, and begin building a relationship with a mentor they will remain in contact with for at least a year.

WRA is a proud sponsor of the Youth Leadership Forum Legislative Affairs Day!  Part of the YLF includes a day where participants learn about relevant laws, tour the Capitol and meet their legislator. We ask for mentors to help support youth in these meetings, as this is a first time experience, and can be intimidating.  Look for more information in our next newsletter about how you can be a mentor during this event.

This year’s YLF will be held June 27—July 2, 2010 on the Edgewood College campus in Madison, WI.  Interested students must apply by 3/1/2010.  This is a competitive process.

For more information, contact Carolyn Leung, WI YLF Director at cleung@cesa2.k12.wi.us  or call (608) 758-6232 ext 333, or download an application at http://www.wsti.org/ylc.ylf.php
